Day Three: Solar and Geothermal Energy
Lesson Objective: By the end of this lesson students will be able to describe the functions of solar and geothermal energy.
On day three of this unit students will learn more in depth about solar and geothermal energy. The teacher will read Solar and Wind Power by Peter Lerangis to the class. This book not only explains how solar power works but also includes facts and real life stories about successful uses of solar and wind power. Students will then research and explain the basic function of solar collectors by using the information on this website. The teacher will have printed the information for the students to use, so each student has a copy of the information. After students have documented the basic functions of solar collectors they will watch a 5 minute video about a geothermal plant and how it works. Then as a class we will read this article about geothermal energy and talk about the pros and cons. Student’s will then write a short essay using the information learned about if they are for or against geothermal and why.
