Day One: What is Renewable Energy?
Lesson Objective: By the end of this lesson students will be able to identify and describe four different forms of renewable energy.
On day one of this unit I will provide an overview of what renewable energy is and the different forms of renewable energy. I will cover solar energy, wind energy, tidal/ water energy, and geothermal energy. Prior to this unit students have completed a unit about fossil fuels, so students will be able to see the alternative to fossil fuels. At the beginning of this lesson the concept of how energy is transferred from one object to another will be reintroduced so the students can recall their prior knowledge of energy. This video will then be shown to the class to help them understand the importance of renewable energy. After the teacher has provided a brief description of different forms of renewable energy the students will create a concept map of energy sources. One side will be sources from fossil fuels and the other will be renewable energy sources. At the end of this lesson the teacher will read the book Energy Island by Allan Drummond. This book is about conserving and how one person can make a big difference on conserving natural resources. This is book will teach the students how the use of renewable energy is relevant to their lives. Reading this book at the end of the lesson will build on the content learned and prepare them for the following week's lessons.
