Day Two: Wind and Water Energy
Lesson Objective: By the end of this lesson all students will be able to identify how energy can be transferred in various ways and between objects by participating in two group stations and writing a reflection about what they have learned.
Day two of this unit will be my fully developed lesson plan. I will begin the lesson with describing two forms of renewable energy, wind and water. I will share with the class diagrams of how wind and tidal energy work. Once these concepts are reintroduced the class will be divided into two groups. One group will first observe a model of a working waterwheel to investigate the transformations of energy involved in turning the blades of a hydro-turbine. The other group will first build and then gather data from a model anemometer which will build their understanding and explain how wind in used to generate energy. The groups will switch once they both have completed the task. At the end of the lesson we will have a group discussion to share what the students observed. Then the class will be asked to write a reflection of what they learned.
